On October 16, 2011, CrossFit Brand X was the site of the inaugural CrossFit Kids Teen Gauntlet, the first full-blown CrossFit Kids competition featuring individual teen athletes going head to head in three divisions: Novice, Junior Varsity, and Varsity. Twenty-nine athletes, traveling from as far away as Arizona, Michigan, and Texas, participated, and, all told, some 200 people witnessed the groundbreaking event.
Athletes competing from CrossFit Brand X included Joel Waddington (Novice) and Josh Waddington (Novice), Jack Marks (Junior Varsity), Duncan Martin (Junior Varsity), Cole Dick (Varsity), and Matt Ross (Varsity). Griffin Winter stormed in from Orange County to represent CrossFit Brand X in the Junior Varsity division.
A few of our favorite vendors were on hand: Life as Rx (
http://lifeasrx.com/), Rx Jump Ropes (
http://rxjumpropes.intuitwebsites.com/), and Stronger Faster Healthier (
http://strongerfasterhealthier.com/). And even one of our enterprising CrossFit Kids, Sarah Mittman, pitched a tent and sold her custom duct tape wares. For the spectators, CrossFit Brand X offered a paleo snack bar and raffles for prizes that included swag from Life as Rx, Rx Jump Ropes, Brand X, Stronger Faster Healthier, Rogue Fitness, massage therapist and mobility expert Marko Maehler, and 2POOD Performance Apparel.
The weather was perfect, the energy was high, and the three WODs were simple and brutal. When the dust settled, we had winners for all of the divisions:
Novice Female:
1st: Kama Highashiyama – CrossFit Monrovia
2nd: Madi Schiller – CrossFit Ridgecrest
Novice Male:
1st: Max Vargas – CrossFit Ridgecrest
2nd: Isaac Lewis – Orange Glen High School
3rd: Joel Waddington – CrossFit Brand X
Junior Varsity Female:
1st: Savannah Voelker – CrossFit Ridgecrest
Junior Varsity Male:
1st: Duncan Martin – CrossFit Brand X
2nd: Nicholas Ng – CrossFit Caveman
3rd: Cameron Hunt/Jared Cortez/Jack Marks – CrossFit Monrovia/Iron Monkey CrossFit/CrossFit Brand X, respectively
Varsity Female:
1st: Valerie Calhoun – St. Francis High School
2nd: Cecilia Guerrero – CrossFit California City
3rd: Kaley Read – CrossFit Ridgecrest
Varsity Male:
1st: Garrett Janda – CrossFit Leiftime Fitness
2nd: Steven Roessig/Jesse Llopis – CrossFit Flagstaff/Iron Monkey CrossFit
3rd: Joshua Brydon – CrossFit 360
Although the Novice and Junior Varsity kids might not yet be as strong and fast as the Varsity fire-breathers who strutted their CrossFitting stuff, each and every athlete demonstrated jaw-dropping Varsity-level heart, guts, and grit.
Under the stewardship of Jeff and Mikki Martin, Dan Strametz shouldered the burden of directing this first competition. It went off like clockwork and was a testament to the careful attention he gave to the details. But the Gauntlet would not have been a success without the wonderful volunteers who stepped up to make it such a memorable day for all the teens, parents, coaches, and the Brand X staff.
To everyone who gave their time and energy: THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! You are the spirit of CrossFit.
It was an awesome day and a spectacular start to what just might change an already revolutionary sport.
