Our very own Connor Martin has qualified for the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games Southern California Regionals!
We’ve all seen him instructing and training, but some may not know just how long his journey to this exciting point has been. At age 19, Connor has been CrossFitting since he was 12 when he began training alongside his father, CrossFit Brand X co-owner and head coach, Jeff Martin. In fact, those early sessions with his dad inspired the development of CrossFit Kids.
Connor competed at the first CrossFit Games in Aromas, California, in 2007 at age 15, performing the WODs as Rx’d for adults (http://www.youtube.com/user/BXSDF#p/u/12/5esxIDTs1Ak), and again in 2008 at 16, where he delivered a gutsy and inspiring performance of the final WOD, a heavy Grace (http://www.youtube.com/user/BXSDF#p/u/47/4okrkb1kUwM).
For the following year, the CrossFit Games expanded to include a regional qualifier, which he competed in (http://www.youtube.com/user/BXSDF#p/u/87/9z7NRdl5ZPE). Since then, qualifying for the Games has been Connor’s primary goal as a CrossFitter. In 2010, as the Games continued to grow, Connor’s efforts in the first Sectionals competition were severely hampered by an injury. He went down hard, but did not tap out, completing all of the WODs during the two-day event. He emerged from that incredibly trying ordeal more determined than ever to qualify in 2011, and as an indication of his devotion to the fledgling sport and his sportsmanship, Connor went on to serve as a judge at the 2010 Southern California Regionals. In December of that year, he competed in the third Next Level Invitational (http://www.nextlevelinvitational.com/).
Not just a CrossFit athlete, Connor is also an experienced and skilled CrossFit instructor. He holds a rare Level 3 CrossFit certification, a CrossFit Kids certification, and several CrossFit specialty certifications. He is a member of the CrossFit Kids Course traveling team and has attended over 20 Level 1 certifications.
Connor’s accomplishments are not limited to CrossFit. He is a second-degree kenpo karate black belt, having earned his black belt at age 13, the first and youngest student ever to make it through the arduous Brand X system. He also holds a yellow belt in krav maga and wrestled throughout high school.
Connor is the only CrossFit Brand X athlete going to the Southern California Regionals this year, so he can use all the support we can give him. A great way to do that is attending the event itself—a ton of fun for the whole family. The competition is going down from June 17 through June 19 at Cal State Long Beach. Get some, Connor!
