      <title>CrossFit Kids and Teen Competition&#45;&#8220;The Gauntlet&#8221;</title>

Athletes competing from CrossFit Brand X included Joel Waddington (Novice) and Josh Waddington (Novice), Jack Marks (Junior Varsity), Duncan Martin (Junior Varsity), Cole Dick (Varsity), and Matt Ross (Varsity). Griffin Winter stormed in from Orange County to represent CrossFit Brand X in the Junior Varsity division.
 A few of our favorite vendors were on hand: Life as Rx (http://lifeasrx.com/), Rx Jump Ropes (http://rxjumpropes.intuitwebsites.com/), and Stronger Faster Healthier (http://strongerfasterhealthier.com/). And even one of our enterprising CrossFit Kids, Sarah Mittman, pitched a tent and sold her custom duct tape wares. For the spectators, CrossFit Brand X offered a paleo snack bar and raffles for prizes that included swag from Life as Rx, Rx Jump Ropes, Brand X, Stronger Faster Healthier, Rogue Fitness, massage therapist and mobility expert Marko Maehler, and 2POOD Performance Apparel.
The weather was perfect, the energy was high, and the three WODs were simple and brutal. When the dust settled, we had winners for all of the divisions:
Novice Female:
1st: Kama Highashiyama – CrossFit Monrovia
2nd: Madi Schiller – CrossFit Ridgecrest
Novice Male:
1st: Max Vargas – CrossFit Ridgecrest
2nd: Isaac Lewis – Orange Glen High School

Although the Novice and Junior Varsity kids might not yet be as strong and fast as the Varsity fire&#45;breathers who strutted their CrossFitting stuff, each and every athlete demonstrated jaw&#45;dropping Varsity&#45;level heart, guts, and grit. 
Under the stewardship of Jeff and Mikki Martin, Dan Strametz shouldered the burden of directing this first competition. It went off like clockwork and was a testament to the careful attention he gave to the details. But the Gauntlet would not have been a success without the wonderful volunteers who stepped up to make it such a memorable day for all the teens, parents, coaches, and the Brand X staff.
To everyone who gave their time and energy: THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! You are the spirit of CrossFit.
It was an awesome day and a spectacular start to what just might change an already revolutionary sport.

Through Keegan Martin, we have been best friends for a long time and he told me I should come see what it was all about.

How long have you been CrossFit?
About 9 months
 
What improvements have you seen, if any, with your gymnastics since beginning CrossFit?
I&#39;ve seen improvements in my balance and strength with my gymnastics. I also ran for track and field for Ramona High School. My 100 meter time has improved so much as well since I have started CrossFit.
 
 What made you want to compete in the Teen Challenge at the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games?
I thought it would just be a fun thing to do. It wasn&#39;t till I got to the Home Depot Center on check in day  did i realize what a big deal it was to be a part of it.

What did you like most about the Teen Challenge?
My favorite thing about the Teen Challenge was the respect that everyone had for one another. Even though none of us really knew each other at first, after the first workout we had all bonded. We all sweat, cried and even ripped our hands together. It&#39;s because we all share the same passion.  On the last workout of the third day, even though time ran out the last remaining teams were determined to finish the workout. All the teams got up and ran the last 400 meters with the remaining teams. That was so awesome.
 
What do you&#39;re family/friends think about you doing CrossFit?
I&#39;m now attending the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise. A lot of my new friends were confused when I tried to explain CrossFit and how it was my sport. After I showed them videos and pictures from the Teen Challenge they were totally impressed. They didn&#39;t expect me, the  little 5&quot;2&#39;  girl , to be a power lifter. Now every week when I come to school they ask me if I have any new P.R&#39;s and they tease me and ask if i can lift a car yet. My parents and family are very proud of my achievements in CrossFit. When ever my grandparents find an opening in a conversation they brag about their &quot;power lifting granddaughter in California&quot;.

My goals are just to be a good athlete and be joyful while doing it.
