First kickboxing bout It was the year 1993 I was 20 years of age, a blue belt in Kenpo and weighed 257 lbs mostly solid, I learned a-lot about taking punches from sifu Jeff   as he would bomb on my pretty face day in day out at kenpo class.
Sifu Dan Cepeda took the kickboxing training very seriously, He didnt just want us to compete but he wanted us to win, Win and show Cepeda bros Pride, He didnt want us to go in there and get blind sided.

Our kickboxing team consisted of 4 people
Myself, TK, Mike Ball, and Instructor Kevin Lynd.

The training was brutal for us, we had to do double classes and we had to weight train on our own.

In Day class we focused on Kenpo training 1 PM to 2 PM
Then we would come back at 7 PM and Sifu Dan would split us apart from the rest of the class for our kickboxing training.
The training consisted of bag work, bag work, bag work
Since kickboxing rounds were 2 minutes a round, sifu dan would have us do 4 minute rounds of 6 rounds of kicking and punching on the bags, 1 minute breaks that were really 40 seconds

Then we would work on bobbing and weaving (Never my strong point personally.

We would then work on Combinations to use while sparring full contact.
that would last about half an hour or a little longer.

Then the Killer
Sifu Dan would have us fight 4 minute rounds in a kickboxing style full contact setting
Every minute Sifu would send in a fresh face to fight one of us, You could see how tired we would get, This would last 6 rounds of 4 minute rounds, By the 4th round I was dead tired personally

We would end our sessions with the medicine ball and another 3 rounds of 4 minute rounds on the bags.

I would then go to 24 hour fittness and play full court basketball, lift weights, swim some laps and then relaxt in thesauna and jakuzzi.

The kenpo classes were 3 days a week
We would come in Sat morning for Kickboxing training as well, so kickboxing classes were 4 times per week.

And 24 hour fittness training was (for me anyway) 5 days per week.

The end result was pure anger for me
I wanted to kill my oppenent in the ring.
For, he is the reason Im going thru this hell
He is the reason I havent had Carne asada for the last 3 months
He is the reason, I havent been with any of my lady friends for the last 3 months

Im going to kill him lol.

The bell rung, I was ready
Bam bam bam 1st round TKO
I celebrated with a carne asada plat that night

I had 6 matches total
1 was at the embarcadero in Down town San Diego and was promoted by black tiger and the kickboxing company they had started called IKBL International Kickboxing League.

Up for grabs was the CA State Championship
I won   Still have the belt hanging up in my living room.

I won 5 matches and got robbed with a draw :x in one.

TK had 8 matches he was 6-1-1
Kevin had one match 1-0
Mike ball had one match, he was killing his oppenent until he came up bent and hurt his knee in the ring, so he would have been 1-0

Sifu asked me to write down my eperiences here, I will say this, if you are going to do this, be prepared, be over prepared.
You are not only representing yourself and your pride, but you are also representing your school and your schools pride.

If anyone has any questions, Feel free to ask, Ill be more than happy to answer them.

Thank you for that.  That some hard-ass training you went through but you came out on top…

I can only say: WOW. The training was harder than the fights. Good strategy. wink

Thanks for sharing that.

We have too many heroes lost and not enough workout days to commemorate them. I think it’s fitting to always think of the men and women in service, whether military or peace officers and public safety, as we do our workouts. A bit of motivation to throw a little of our sweat and maybe a drop of blood on the floor in their honor.
