This section will be where the Brand X Kenpo Rules and Traditions are posted.
We may move comments to a separate section so that people can just read through the rules & traditions.

Private Lessons

Private lessons are an important part of training at Brand X. We make every effort to provide each student with a FREE 15 minute to half an hour private (Depending on Rank) once a week.(More than one half hour private a week is at an extra charge)  Sometimes these will be Semi-Private lessons, with two or three students, depending on Instructor availability and discretion.
If a student or an instructor cannot be available for a scheduled private,
they need to let the Instuctor/Student know directly.  Please obtain the phone number of your Instructor/student so you can communicate any changes in your private schedule.
DO NOT ASK OTHERS TO COMMUNICATE CHANGES FOR YOU.
Private Lessons that are missed three times in a row, may be cancelled by the instructor and another student put into that timeslot. Privates surrounding class times are at a premium and hard to obtain, so please keep this in mind if you have to miss a scheduled timeslot.

Lining Up
Ok I am going to put this one down, because I think maybe some people are unaware of it.
When we line up - Line up with the senior student, not (necessarily)the person next to you - look to the right and see where they are standing, sitting, meditating whatever, you line yourself up with them.  If for some reason you think they are lining up in the “wrong place” - still line up with them. The Instructors will call out the senior student if the line up is in the wrong place.

Bowing In & Greeting Instructors
When we (Kenpo Students) enter or leave the school, Bow in at the door, bow out at the door (facing in), also bow as you approach the mat.
upon entering the school, immediately Greet Instructors in order of seniority. Go to each Sifu and Instructor and (wait for them to acknowledge you if they are busy ) and shake hands.
When an Instructor or Sifu enters/or leaves the school Senior student should bow him in/out ” Kenpo students Turn and face the door, pay your respects to Sifu Dan “. Thereafter run up to the instructor and shake hands- unless otherwise directed by Instructors teaching the class.

I generally don’t post here.  I let BBoJ and Sifu run this forum but here is one that sticks in my throat.
If you are going to miss your private call your student or teacher.
If you are going to miss class let us know so that we don’t worry about you.
If you are going to take time off, let us know, so that we don’t waste our time waiting for you to show up for your private.
If you are quiting, let us know.
If you have, been coming to a class on a regular basis or teaching privates to people on a regular basis and you are going to stop, let us know.
These things should be done out as a sign of respect and regard for the school.  Not doing them is obviously taken as the opposite.

Exchange numbers with Private Instructor so you can do the above.

TESTING
Testing is not done on a time basis. ( Except for minimum times between belt levels)  It is done on a competance basis.
The goal is to be competant, not to spend a given amount of time learning, It will take, however long it takes.
When your instructor thinks you are ready to test, you will be told.
NEVER ask about when you are testing. The following things play into testing dates, regular attendance, attitude , discipline, practice, making your private lessons, effort , ability and contribution to the Art (teaching)
We never charge for Kenpo Testing.
We are never financially motivated to move people along or test often.
You can rest assured that if you test, your Instructors think you are ready.

THANKS MIKKI FOR ALL THE INPUT.

ALL BRAND X STUDENTS: WHEN THERE ARE PRIVATE LESSONS GOING ON DO NOT WALK IN BETWEEN THE INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT! THIS HAPPENS A LOT.

The Code Of Respect

Respect The Arts
Respect the Sifus
Respect The Laws
Respect Others
Respect Your Parents
Respect Yourself

The Kenpo Creed
I come to you with only karate, my empty hands, I have no weapons, but should I be forced to defend myself, my principles or my honor, my family or my friends, should it be a matter of life or death, of right or wrong then these are my weapons, my empty hands.

Kenpo Gi & Patches
Our Kenpo uniform is called a GI. (pronounced “ghee”)
We wear black GI’s. In the summer we sometimes go without GI top if the Sifus/Instructors tell the students it is hot enough not to wear them, however you must be wearing a Brand X T- Shirt to do this.
Full GI uniforms are always worn on test days. Brand X T-Shirt should be worn under the GI. Athletic shoes are worn, as we are a reality based school and any likely self defense situation will probably involve you with your shoes on.  No Boots, heels or other non athletic shoes. Crosstrainers, running, wrestling, tennis shoes are all O.K.
Patches
At Brand X we have 4 patches for the Gi top, three are mandatory one is optional.
The first is the Circular Brand X patch, which should be sewn onto the left lapel over the heart. Pin it on and put the GI on to make sure it is straight and the logo is not rotated.  The American flag goes on the right arm slightly below the shoulder. The Yin Yang patch goes on the left arm slightly below the shoulder. The optional rectangular Brand X patch goes on the back center at the neck.
You should get patches as soon as possible, you cannot test until your GI has patches.
Protective gear
All students should have a mouthpiece.  Boys should wear cups to each class. Chest protectors are optional for the ladies. Headgear must be worn when sparring.
Sparring Gear
By orange belt ( white/yellow for kids) you need to purchase sparring gear from Brand X
(you can purchase sparring gear elsewhere but need approval from Sifu Jeff) Sparring gear includes
mouthpiece
Gloves ( appropriate size/weight)
Headgear ( must be full coverage with cage - all kids approved by Sifu Jeff adults)

Spectators & Siblings
We welcome spectators to view any and all of our classes.
We welcome families to bring siblings along too.
However, certain rules must be followed. Kids must be supervised and are not allowed in the parking lot area. If they are outside they must be accompanied by an adult.  Obviously, quiet behavior is encouraged, loud or disruptive behavior is not. Please do not let kids run through the school play in the store area, or block the entry or walkways..  No one is allowed in the workout area unless they are a student attending the current class.
