You know, it is good, but sad at the same time.  I weigh 218 right now and at age 17 and weighing 148 I deadlifted 415 so I had hoped to do better, but at 40 I am not complaining.  Ultimate goal is at least 500 lbs on deadlift.  This was my first CFT so far.  I am loving CF!!  Thanks for the good words!!  Where do you live in Texas?

I probably should not have tried this workout ...
Squat - 185lbs
Nearly died on 205 failure - I have to practice unloading with lighter weights before next time.  I have a rack without a safety bar.
Shoulder press - 115lbs (failed on 135lbs)
Deadlift - 205lbs (maxed out my weight set - did 5 reps easily)

Any suggestions for unloading during a failed squat?

Here’s a video that GD has posted. The fail is on the 2nd attempt.

BTW, I want to HIGHLY recommend BOTH the DVD and the Book “Starting Strength”.  In the past, I could feel myself rocking forward on my toes and stressing my knees.  In combination with the book and my Do-Win shoes, I can say that after doing CFT today, I don’t feel anything in my knees.  The DVD is so nice because it lets you watch Coach Rip with a variety of body styles, men and women, and different body part length combinations.  I believe the DVD is great to watch BEFORE you read a section on a lift and then watch again after reading a lift.

Plano (Wylie, actually), by the other Big D . . .

re: the 500, you’ll get it, you’re strong.  I’ll get 300 then complain about 350 . . . but that’s how I am.

My lifts were as follows:

Back Squat: 365
Shoulder Press: 200
Deadlift: 350

My CrossFit Total: 915

Not too bad for only doing this for a week!

Worth noting is I was out with some friends bar hopping last night and I missed a step a few times because I wasn’t paying attention. At the end of the night my left knee was killing me as I guess I must have tweaked it at one point. So now my knee is nice and stiff today. Still, it didn’t stop me from doing my lifts. Just a note for myself later that I sucked it up and still worked out. This reminds me, for warm-up I did 5 minutes on the treadmill and did a few light weight lifts slowly increasing the weight prior to going for my max.

That’s a great example of how to do it safely.

I’d add that you should practice dumping the weight with lighter weights before you ever get in a position that you need to know how to do it.  It’ll make some noise, but a little forethought could save you from serious injury.

Warm-Up
Row 500m (1:32)

3-2-1-Go

CFS WOD 090410 - “Nate”
“Half Nate”
AMRAP in 10 minutes:
2 x Muscle-Ups (Not full extension at bottom)
4 x Hand-Stand Push-Ups
8 x KettleBell Swings, 2 Pd
4 Rounds + MUs

Cool-Down
Mostly Upper Body Stretches

Cut this down to half time to save my arms for Burg’s Cert that I am attending tomorrow in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.  Happy with the decision considering the fatigue that I’ve been fighting off this week.

HSPUs were definitely the limiter here.  KB Swings were almost non-existent and I only missed one MU.  Did the first 3 sets of MUs unbroken and after that there was a bit of staring at the Rings to make sure I was really ready to go, but the slowest part was definitely trying to string kipping HSPUs together.

Next time I should try to remember to go with scaled HSPU and see if the MUs hold steady for more rounds.

Been doing cross fit for a while (~6 months) and I love it! Got an ipod touch a few months back and makes life alot easier to track progress and the workouts (less stuff to remember to bring to the gym), so that helps out alot.

Anyways knocked out CFT today: 805
2 PRs and one set back.

Squat: 325 (PR)
Shoulder Press: 135 (down from 155)
Deadlift: 345 (PR)

Pretty pumped on results, and considering I’ve never been a big gym guy, the results I’ve seen since starting CF do nothing but make me a true believer!  Thanks to all for this site and HQ!

Hee “If you don’t have a damn good idea of what you can do for a heavy triple, you don’t need to be doing a CrossFit Total yet.”  Guess I’m not ready yet, but I can work on form smile Time to buy that book. I’ve put it off long enough.

Go for it!!

I hate to sound like a creepy physical culture evangelist but i put ~10% onto my CFT after reading it. The pictures are very helpful and it breaks the ifts down well so you can feel like you know what all the parts of your body are doing as you hurl dangerous amounts of weight around.

Its ordered! Woo hoo smile

Sarah, Did you order both the book and the DVD? just curious. I’ve had the book, but haven’t bought the DVD yet.

Just the book, I didn’t really look around the site more than that.

With Gordos group. I was hoping for a metcon to pair with that horrible combination of ME front squats and high rep back squats from this morning, but ME Overhead presses was ok too since those were scheduled for tommorrow anyway.

I’m trying to decide if I should hit a really short metcon today ... maybe <10m and take the whole weekend off.
or if I should wait and do a ~15m metcon tommorrow and take sunday off
or if I should wait and do a mediumish distance LSD run/row tommorrow.. maybe 3k or so and take sunday off
or if I should just call it done and come back monday morning for “Squat Day”

Thoughts?
