Kickboxing class has been fairly light the past few weeks. I think it is because more people are doing Crossfit, and simply don’t have the energy to do back to back classes. But it brings up an unusual problem, some of the people who are in the class(emphasis on the some and not all) are real slackers. They bring down the energy of the class and involve others who might want to work hard in their giggling and nonsense. (okay, its early I’ll probably edit that later). The point is, I never intended our kickboxing class to be a fight class. I did intend the class to teach basic fundamentals and be a very hard class. CrossFit is for GPP, Kickboxing is for SPP. Now how ever the class seems to be filled with Yammering. So, I am asking advice on a couple of areas. First, I hate to admit failure at anyting, but there are a few people who come to that class who just don’t get it. They have been with us for years and as Sifu Dan pointed out, “They just don’t know what hard work is”. If I’m not standing right over them they slack off. On the other side, (and yes galling it is) they have complained because they don’t have six pack abs. Dieting is too hard, running is too hard, everything is too hard. But I’m too blame for their flabby arms and gut. Anyway, I’m thinking it would be best to approach a couple of these people and simply let them know that the kickboxing classes at the fitness center would probably lead them to the level of mediocrity they are looking for. Ideas? Comments? Please do not suggest I spend more time with the individuals who add so little to the school. My time is limited, and I want to give it to those people who are working hard and giving back to the school and to others at the school.
I think you are right about confronting them….If they refuse to do the work in the class that you schedule for them then they are wasting your time…so tell them that if they want to socialize instead of work hard and interfere with your teaching..then go to 24 hour fitness..socialize all they want…just don’t waste any of my time and stop blaming me for your lack of effort….you can’t make anyone work harder but you can tell those that they are a nuisance to you and are affecting the moral of the rest of the class…
call them on it individually. take them aside and breifly tell them how their attitude in class needs to change…you can always just make them go run laps, or do burpees, for everytime they arent working to a level you expect. I know you arent the type of instructor to play drill sargeant, so I dont know if thats an avenue to go down. but if they dont work harder to avoid incessant running or burpees, then they should be asked to leave.
TOUGH ! MORE THAN WASTING OUR TIME, THEY ARE WASTING THEIR TIME AND THAT CAN BE DONE ELSE WHERE. PRETTY SIMPLE GD. (If they can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen)
I definately agree, GD. Those who want to work on a different level than Brand X offers should go somewhere else. You guys ( all of the instructors ) give so much of the precious little time you have, it’s a shame for it to be wasted. A one on one, see ya! is the way to go. You should be able to run YOUR SCHOOL the way you want. I am a student at this school because I have certain goals and achievements that I would like to accomplish, and you offer that service. Really hard work with great results. Too much socializing gets in the way. My 2 cents.
While reading this post and pondering what to do, what to do..
My dog stepped on a toy which loudly said
“Use the force Luke”
I think it means something…
My right calf gets really sore after standing in fighting stance during class. Am I doing something wrong, or will it just go away after I’ve been doing it longer?
Marla, I have had that problem and it seems to diminish over time. But after not practicing it comes back a little.
One thing that’s been hard for me to learn is to balance in the fighting stance so that my weight is on both legs. Perhaps putting too much weight on the back leg is the culprit?
I’d be interested in the instructors or more experienced kickboxers’ answers.
