I have a guy I am training and he has the dreaded muted hip. ITs awful too, I havent really been able to get him to get his pelvis to turn over and keep it there. Maybe once or tiwce he has been able turn it over with me actually grabing his pelvis and turning it over with my hands. But I havent had any luck re-creating this lately. I am sure people have seen this, I just dont know if I am explaining it clear enough. Does anyone have anything I can do to show him how to do this or stretches for him to do to get the flexibility to turn it over. He also speaks broken english, so I dont know if I am efficiently communicating with him which adds to the troubles.
Do you guys have Donald Duck over there? If so, I tell folks to stick out their butt like Donald. Stupid, kid like cue but the picture it paints normally gives them the right idea.
do supermans and see if he can slowly learn it and then translate it into an upright standing position.
And/or those reverse supermans that GD uses to teach the arch position for kipping might be useful.
Lay face-down, hold a bar or a pair of dumbbells and lift your kegs and hips off the ground. Sort of a reverse hyper-extension on the floor, or the “hug a twinkie” movement as gymnasts refer to it.
Thanks for the ideas guys. Would you suggest programming the supermans in a wod, or only as a warm up and have them hold them for a certain amount of time? I normally would only use them in a warmup but with less than half an hr to do everything I try to program in things that will improve their skills also. THey are getting there slowly but there are a couple people lagging behind (like this guy) and I need to fix this stuff asap.
Oh and metric is this like an extended superman, same basic motion but the weights keep their upper body down and the hips and lower come go towards vertical? I did some searches on it but I couldnt find any pictures yet and the description I found says its done on a gymnast horse.

I think ill do a solo or semi solo session with him tonight and video tape it. He sits at a desk hunched over with his pelvis in the muted hip position. So he isnt sitting on his but cheeks but on the back of his pelvis. Everytime I walk by him I notice it, maybe I will start telling him to sit up straight. When he does the squat he will get to about 1/4 height with it in a neutral position but then right when he drops below that his knees drive forward. I have him box squating now, I think I need to bring the bench in to put in front of him to keep his knees from tracking forward though.
When he does push press it is the worst, I havent worked with him long enough to fix it yet but I can get him in the position one rep but the next its back to muted hip. He says he feels the difference but he doesnt stick with it. The cues I use are but back and knees back.
When I am working on the squat I will say ok but back and he will put it back but lock his knees straight. SO I will put my hand just slightly in front of his knees and say bend your knees with out touching my hands. He cant do this, right when he unlocks his knees they shoot forward through my hands and his pelvis turns over into the muted hip position. there is an obvious lack of flexbility but I dont know if its more than that so I was trying to come up with a way to get him used to being in this position and holding it there. I tried squats with his but against the wall but he cant hold it and his whole back will go against the wall and he mutes his hip.

Donald Duck is a good cue. I would put him on wall squats with the DD visual. Probably fix the squat in a few days. Not much use worrying about the push press or jerk until the squat is fixed, but I would use the fix I sent Kempie as the traditional fix only reinforces the muted hip problem ion some folks.

I’m having a mental image of mastroj patiently playing a video of old Disney cartoons and pointing to the cartoon characters he wants his client to emulate.

And then the poor guy will probably start doing the voice instead of the movement
Mastroj: Do you know who this is?
Client: Si, Donald Duck
Mastroj: Good, this is Donal duck’s Culo, I want your Culo to look like his culo
Client: Hra Hra Hra (he laughs like castro, I dont know how to spell ha in spanish) Si
Mastroj: Everyone today is all about (name withdrawn to respect privacy)‘s Culo
And yes this is exactly how the first 5 min of class went. Well all of the people who have been to more than 5 classes and have the squat down perfect I had do a workout on their own.
On a serious note, this worked very well. He did a bunch of full depth squats, I even got him to initiate the ascent with his hips! He got the donald duck culo thing right away but he kept putting alot of weight on the wall so I told him the wall was really just a sheet and if he puts too much weight on it then he will fall on his but. This worked very well. Thank you all who helped get me through this. I am very excited that this worked, you guys are awesome, I couldnt imagine what I could learn from you all in a couple sessions of shadowing. Jen at CFWatertown lets me go up there, help out, and shadow them whenever I ahve the chance which is an awesome experience.
