Hello, all.  I am a cop and was just recently switched to the bicycle unit.  So now instead of sitting in my cruiser for 10 hours a day, I’m on a mountain bike.  While we certainly don’t ride the entire shift, we put 10-3-miles on our bikes every day without even trying.
So here’s the problem: Even without being on bike patrol it takes lots and lots and lots of food to keep me at my current weight (185 or so).  I have no desire to lose any weight and would, in fact, like to gain 5-10 lbs.  Now with the added time on the bike each day, the pounds are already coming off.
Does anyone have any suggestions for some quick and easy (and healthy, and cheap, and…) ways to add an additional 1500-2500 calories to my daily intake?  I don’t want to mow down 5 Snickers bars a day, or drink a gallon of juice or milk.  I have had bad experiences with weight gainer powders in the past (the less said about that, the better).
Thnaks for any help.

The usual answer is gomad (gallon of milk a day). Besides that I really have no ideas besides eat alot. I mean you can cut way down on your carbs and just pound in the meat and fats. But I have no experience or good information to point you towards on this.

Sorry I couldnt more of more help

I have had good success reducing body fat but not lean mass while keeping calories up by putting a lot of heavy cream in my coffee and drinking about a quart of half and half a day. Cream is all fat with no carbs, half and half is mostly fat with minimal carbs. Both are calorie dense. This will help your system to become a fat burning machine and it tastes really good, too. Some folks don’t tolerate milk well but do OK with creams because of the lack of lactose. Give it a try.

Yeah, if you need extra calories, I would lean toward the “more fat” side of the equation.

Generally speaking from a “zone diet” perspective, you go for fat loss until you hit bottom or your goal weight and then increase calories with good fat (nuts, avocados, etc.) As Bob G says, cream is an option.  Find out what works for you and is available.  On the plus side, fat is calorie dense so you should be able to maintain equilibrium.

What TP said.

I think nuts are going to be the answer for you.
If weight gain powders give you problems and you’re not keen on milk then either instinctively or knowingly you’re lactose intolerant or casein sensitive, basically dairy isn’t your friend (my sister the naturopath says it isn’t anyone’s friend).

Stock up on them and carry them around to add them to your meals.
Macadamias are the most oil dense that I know of, not the cheapest though.

Thanks for the suggestions, gentlemen.  I now have a quart ziplock in my bike bag filled with almonds that is emptied regularly and switched from skim to cream in my 2-3 coffees a day.  Too early to tell any results but I am hopeful.  Wish I could take a cue from Homer Simpson and put butter in my coffee.

1)  Why don’t you want to dip below 185lbs.?  Just curious.

2)  Where do you keep the doughnuts on a bike?  Do you have a basket in front of the handle bars?  grin

Please.  Be nice.  Donuts have holes so you stick them on the ends of the handlebars . . .

I’m going to guess:
1) For a cop, being big and strong is an aid to survival.
2) Vanity

Maybe, but the icing gets all over the tassells and attracts bees.

Vanity certainly can’t be discounted, but it’s hopefully at least as much work-related.  As long as speed isn’t compromised, bigger is better.  Imagine you’re a Bad Guy.  You’ve been doing dumb stuff and you get caught and a cop tells you to turn around and place your hands behind your back.  The cop is six feet tall and weighs 160 pounds.  You outweigh him by 20 pounds and you being a Bad Guy decide to ignore the cop’s warnings and put up a fight.  Now imagine the cop is six feet tall and weighs 200 pounds.  You are now outweighed by him by 20 pounds and you decide that discretion is the better part of valor and you don’t put up a fight.
Luckily for the cop, he now doesn’t have to fight and can hold on to the box of doughnuts he is holding (we tried to put them on the handlebars, but they got mushed).  smile

You may want to search for posts from AxelBear, or maybe he’ll see this. I believe he’s a cop. He is specifically trying to gain mass so some of his knowledge may be helpful to you.
