As many of you have probably seen on the forums my wife has just started CF, and both of us are extremely excited about it.

she was diagnosed as a child with mild to moderate scoliosis but has never received treatment for it. she asked me to get on here and see if any of you folks have had any experience with this condition or know of any exercises that will target those muscles around the spine and help keep this condition from worsening.

She has included good mornings and reverse hypers ( ala Louie Simmons ) into her warm up.  Any other ideas would be welcome.

I’m not a chiropractor or anything, but as far as i’ve been told by my doctors and chiropractors, scoliosis will not get any worse when your fully grown, which i guess you wife is.
Myself i’m 17 and have quite a scoliosis at around 36-38 degrees last time i checked (+40 and you need surgery), and i’ve done crossfit since start of october 2010, and it has completly removed my pains caused from scoliosis, so its not something that should be in the way of the training (though she shouldn’t rush up in weight, keep it low and progress slowly as allways!).
about the exercises, i think that she should just do whatevers in the workouts that are pressented wherever you train, because many exercises in crossfit focus on core stabillity, which helps stabilise the back, removing most pain that scoliosis cause, pretty much anything you do because you keep your back straight.
Hope it helps a bit, as said i’m not educated in it, just my personal experience i’m presenting smile

Sounds good bubbi,

The only thing I could think of that might bother the spine would be back extensions (bending at the lower back not the hip). I would do these very slowly at first if at all without having a trainer or someone qualified present. Basically anything that keeps the back straight as in evrything we do good lumbar curve stuff is good for the back. She just needs to start slow and be critical of form. I had a guy start training with me yesterday that has had a couple back surgeries and has 2 fused vertabrae, l4 - l5 I think. He did good with the squats and push press so we will see how he progresses.

Thats awesome she got started. Wish her luck for me!

Thanks guys , I will pass along the good words,  we kinda of thought that all the core stability work would only strengthen the muscles and she has noticed a big improvment in her everyday pain.

Mastroj
I am very happy that she has started with me,  it is hard not to share something that has become such a huge part of my life over the last few months.  And after she finishes her final term of her elem. ed. degree we should see her on the forums more often. she just cannot afford any distractions at the moments and is a bit of a forum junkie.( like me )  tongue wink

Thats awesome man. I have been trying to convince my wife that crossfit might really be for her but she hasnt opened up to it yet. Mostly due to the fact that I was so overwhelmingly excited at first and had that cf is the ultimate w/o program and everything else is pointless mentality. This put her off a bit Im sure. Anyways she has 6 weeks left of this pregnancy and I am hoping that after she recovers a bit and is ready to start moving she comes to me for ideas. I will have her doing crossfit without her even knowing it. Muahaha!  cool grin

Congrats Mastroj

Have you introduced her to CrossFitMom? Could be just the thing to get her recovering after the birth.

I showed her a video on it a while ago. She still wasnt ready to give in I guess you could say. Im gonna give her some time after the birth and see when she wants to start moving. Wish me luck lol. I also just decided to go over to cfmom and ask for advice.
